What is chorea?
From the Greek khoreia (choral dance), this is a sudden, rapid, unpredictable, and involuntary movement of the arms, legs, and often the face. It is characterized by purposeless, continuous, and irregular jerks, which may be unilateral or bilateral, at rest or during volitional acts. Eventually, they disappear with sleep. It affects multiple joints (usually distal) and is typical of Huntington’s disease—an autosomal dominant disorder due to mutation in chromosome 4.
