Surgery Definition – What is a psoas abscess?
Psoas abscess is associated with cold abscess. Psoas abscess is originated from pre existing tuberculous infection which affect the vertebral bodies known as Pott’s disease. Pus will track from the T12 – L 1 vertebraeto the psoas major. Patient with psoas abscess may present with signs of symptoms which are common with tuberculosis such as night sweat, non productive cough and loss of weight. There will be mass in the right iliac fossa. The pus may track along the length of psoas major and forms the abscess in the groin. The pus may track further and present with abscess at the medial thigh at the Hunter’s canal via the femoral triangle.
Psoas abscess can be detected via abdominal x ray which may reveal the loss of psoas shadow on the affected side with CT scan and ultrasound remain the imaging technique of choice. Psoas abscess may be pyogenic due to the parcolic abscess where the abscess may lie in the paracolic gutter due to the subphrenic and pelvic abscess.
