Surgery Definition – What is the anatomy of the pancreas?
Pancreas is located in the retroperitoneum and forming part of the bed of the stomach. Pancreas can be divided into head, uncinated process, neck, body and tail. The blood supply of pancreas originated from the splenic artery and contribution from the superior and inferior and pancreaticoduodenal arteries (head of the pancreas) and venous drainage through the splenic vein which drains into the portal vein.
The function of the pancreas may include exocrine and endocrine function. The exocrine function may include production of the pancreatic juice which consists of lipase, amylase and trypsin from acinar gland and aiding the digestive process. The endocrine function may include production of glucagon from the alpha cells and insulin from beta cells from the islet of Langerhans in the tail of the pancreas.
