Surgery Definition – What is gastro esophageal reflux disease?
Gastro esophageal reflux disease is caused by the reflux of acidic stomach content or known as gastric juice to the distal part of the esophagus which lead to the irritation of the mucosa. In normal individual, this condition is avoided due to the action of the lower esophageal sphincter which acts based on the pinch cock effect of the diaphragm when the diaphragm passed through the hiatus, the angle where the esophagus enters the stomach cardia and the transmission of the intra abdominal pressure which compress the distal esophagus.
