Porto systemic shunt is an anatomical region in which the portal system and the systemic system anastomose. The portal system consists of portal vein and tributaries while the systemic system consists of inferior vena cava and tributaries. There are six sites where porto systemic shunt occurs which include the umbilical vein which normally disappears in the adult and later known as ligamentum teres or round ligament and runs in the free edge of the falciform ligament and anastomoses with the epigastric vein, gastro esophageal junction, splenic veins, rectal plexus diaphragmatic veins and retroperitoneal veins.
