Surgery Definition – What is the treatment for inguinal hernia?
The treatment of inguinal hernia may include conservative and surgical treatments. Conservative treatment may include a trust which is a special belt that able to apply significant pressure to the defect at the inguinal region. Typically reserves for patient who is elderly and unfit for anesthesia.
Surgical treatment may include herniorrhaphy. Herniorrhaphy is done electively in cases which appear to be emergency in nature especially the one that is involving strangulation and obstruction. There are laparoscopy herniorrhaphy and open herniorrhaphy. Open herniorrhaphy can be performed by Lichtenstein (mesh) repair where the bowel is reduced and tighten the deep ring follow by applying the prolene mesh to reinforce the lax posterior wall. Shouldice repair is also can be performed with open herniorrhaphy. Shouldice repair is similar to Lcihtenstein (mesh) repair. However, in shouldice repair the posterior wall is split and the edges are overlapped and prolene sutures are used to strengthen and tighten the overlapped edges.
