Becker Muscular Dystrophy
Becker muscular dystrophy is an X linked disorder (Xp21). Patient may present with symptoms and signs such as clumsiness, delay in motor development, positive Gower maneuver, walking on toe, easily fatigability and pseudohypertrophy of the triceps and gastrocnemius muscle.
Differential diagnosis of Becker Muscular Dystrophy may include Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
Becker muscular dystrophy is variable in term of onset. The investigation requires may include CK enzyme which rises by 100 times normal.The muscular biopsy may reveal reduction in the dystrophic immunostaining. EMG may also be considered.
The treatment of Becker muscular dystrophy may include, corticosteroids and supportive care if the patient develop complication of respiratory failure or cardiac failure.
Complication such as osteoporosis should be treated with calcium and vitamin D.
