Differential Diagnosis of Ascites
There are two form ascites which are exudate ascites and transudate ascites
Differential diagnosis of exudate ascites / causes of exudate ascites are :
-pancreatitis
-malignancy ( pelvic, peritoneal mesothelioma, abdominal)
-hypothyroidism
-myxoedema
-Budd Chiari Syndrome ( obstruction of hepatic vein)
-portal vein thrombosis
-tuberculosis, pyogenic form of infection
-obstruction of lymphatic systems such as lymphoma or surgery which lead to chylous ascites
Differential diagnosis of transudate ascites / causes of transudate ascites are :
-constrictive pericarditis
-cirrhosis
-nephrotic syndrome
-Meig’s syndrome consists of ascites, pleural effusion and ovarian fibroma
