Subacute thyroiditis
Subacute thyroiditis is also known as DeQuervain thyroiditis or granulomatous thyroiditis. Patient may present with symptoms and signs such as painful thyroid gland, fever, flu like illness and transient onset of hyperthyroidism. However, subacute thyroiditis is a self limiting illness.
Patient with subacute thyroiditis may present with just midly enlargement of the thyroid gland with destruction of the thyroid follicles and granulomatous inflammation.
Subacute thyroiditis may occur due to viral illness. Patient with Coxsackievirus or mumps are susceptible to develop subacute thyroiditis besides middle age women.
The treatments for subacute thyroiditis may include prednisolone and NSAIDS.
