Surgery Definition – What is Open Pneumothorax?
Open pneumothorax is also known as sucking chest wound due to the noise produced.Open pneumothorax occurs due to open wound to the chest wall which connected to the thoracic cavity. Significant defect of the chest wall may lead to air following the path of the least resistance and enter to the thoracic cavity on inspiration instead of down the trachea.
Open pneumothorax may present with obvious defect in the chest wall with the present of sucking noise on inspiration. There will be a reduction in the entry of the air and expansion on the ipsilateral sides. Tachycardia and tachypnea are common.
Open pneumothorax is treated by occlusive dressing to the sucking wound by taping on the three sides only. This will lead to the formation of the one way valve. The one way valve will serves as a point of escape for the expired air but limit entry of the air into the thoracic cavity. Chest drain is inserted on the ipsilateral side.
