Surgery Definition – What is pyogenic abscess?
Pyogenic abscess is a type of hepatic abscess.Pyogenic abscess is caused by organism such as Klebsiella, Proteus and E.Coli infection. The spread of infection is associated with hepatocellular carcinoma, diverticulitis and cholangitis. Patient with pyogenic abscess may present with symptoms and signs such as jaundice, weight loss, right upper quadrant pain, fever and chills. There will be right upper quadrant tenderness and hepatomegaly.
The investigation needed may include full blood count which may reveal raise in the white cell count and liver function test where there will be an increase in the level of all liver enzymes. Imaging technique such as ultrasound scan, CT scan or abdominal x ray may reveal calcified cyst with hydatid disease.
The treatment of pyogenic abcess may focus on antibiotic treatment such a gentamicin, cefuroxime or metronidazole. Drainage via percutaneous image guidance is considered. Surgical drainage is only performed if all of the above failed.
