Constipation
Constipation may present with less than three bowel movements per week. There will be one or more cases of encopresis with impaction of the rectum with stool. There will also be grunt, strain and pain with defecation.
The differential diagnosis of constipation may include, hyperparathyroid or hypothyroid, anal abnormalities and Hirschsprung disease, lead poisoning and neuromuscular disorder.
The laboratory investigation may reveal guaiac postive in case of anal fissure or intestinal obstruction and abundant of stool in abdominal radiograph.
The treatment for constipation may include dietary fibers, stimulant laxatives,enema,stool softener and polyethylene glycol.
