Surgery Definition – What are the radiological investigations of the small bowel obstruction?
The radiological investigation of small bowel obstruction may include plain chest x ray and abdominal x ray. Chest X ray is considered to rule out any visceral perforation and abdominal x ray may present signs of small bowel obstruction such as central dilated loops of the bowel, the present of valvulae conniventes or bands which fully traverse the diameter of the bowel and the dilation of the bowel which is more than 5cm.
Double contrast CT scan is considered in stable patient when urgent surgery is not important to indicate the level of obstruction, the viability of the bowel and the causes of obstruction.
