Surgery Definition – What types of blood should be used for shock?
Blood should be considered in cases of ongoing loss of fluid mostly in class 3 and class 4 shock where around 30% - 40% of fluid loss. The type of blood requires for shock include urgently is O negative who is a universal donor. These include packed rhesus negative type O red cells that consists of no surface AB antigen with no anti A or no anti B plasma. The possibility of transfusion reaction may occur due to the blood may not be cross matched.
Type specific blood is needed quickly in 5 – 10 min which include ABO typed which match the blood type of the recipient. Serum sample of patient blood is taken.
The fully cross matched blood is needed within 30 to 60 minutes with ABO and antibody screened. The aim is to ensure maximum compatibility and serum sample is taken.
