Patient with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or restrictive lung disease are more susceptible for respiratory tract infection which is worsen in case of obese patient. The risk of infection is worsen in case of patient undergoing abdominal or thoracic surgery.
Hypoventilation in patient with respiratory problem may lead to basal atelectasis. Any incident of pain will worsen the condition as it may prevent expectoration, mobilisation and deep inhalation. There will be retention of the sputum that accumulates and lead to the formation of mucus plug and collapse of the lung as well as becoming a base of infection.
