Surgery Definition - What types of fluid used in surgical setting?
There are different from of fluids that can be considered. The first one is sodium chloride 0.9% solution which is also known as normal saline which consists of 150 mmol/ l of sodium and 150 mmol/l of chloride. Normal saline is commonly used for maintenance fluid.
The next one is Ringer's lactate which is also known as Hartmann's solution and consists of 131mmol/l of sodium and 111mmol/l of chloride with 5 mmol/ l of potassium and 29 mmol/ l of lactate. Hartmann's solution is commonly used as resuscitation fluid.
Other fluids include glucose 5% or also known as 5% Dextrose ( D5W) and glucose 4 % , sodium chloride 0.18% which is also known as dextrose saline (D/S) that consists of 30 mmol/l of sodium and 30 mmol/l of chloride.
