Surgery Definition – What is pseudocyst?
Pseudocyst is an encapsulated collection of necrotic material and pancreatic fluid which is collected in the lesser sac which is between the posterior wall of the stomach and pancreas. Pseudocyst usually present in patient with chronic alcoholic pancreatitis. Pseudocyst may mimic acute pancreatitis in term of symptoms and signs. There will be tender on palpation epigastric mass. The investigation needed include amylase which may persistently elevated and ultrasound of the abdomen.
The treatment of pseudocyst may depend on the size of pseudocyst. If less than 5 cm, close follow up is considered. If more than 5 cm, two techniques available such as percutaneous ultrasound scan guided aspiration or surgical marsupialization of pseudocyst into posterior wall of the stomach which is known as cystogastrostomy.
