Pathology definition - Post Streptococcal Glomerulonephritis
Post streptococcal glomerulonephritis
Post streptococcal glomerulonephritis may present with intense inflammatory reaction which affect the glomeruli of both kidneys. This may present with punctate hemorrhages on the surface of the kidney. There will be electron dense humps on the epithelial surface of the basement membrane. Besides that there will be swollen, enlarged and hypercellular glomeruli with proliferation of the endothelial cells and mesangial cells. There will also be coarse granular immunofluorescence for IgG / C3.
Post streptococcal glomerulonephritis usually affecting children due to infection with group A beta hemolytic streptococci. Patient may present with urinary red blood cell or red cell cast in the urine. There will be periorbital edema, nephritic syndrome , increase ASO antibody titer( due to streptococcal infection and decreased in serum C3. Post streptococcal glomerulonephritis may resolve spontaneously.
