Medicine Notes - Clinical Procedures - Forms Of Central Venous Catheter

Forms of Central Venous Catheter
There are few forms of central venous catheter which include non tunnelled, tunnelled lines and tunnelled line with implanted port system.
Non tunnelled forms of catheter is useful for 7 - 14 days ( 1 week to 2 weeks). It is considered for temporary used. Non tunnelled forms may include central venous catheter and vascath. Vascath is useful in dialysis. Vascath is a large - bore catheters which need to be locked with heparin to maintain its patency. It is vital to aspirate the heparin to avoid heparinization of the patient before vascath being used.
Tunnelled lines form of catheter is useful for 1 months to 2 years. It is considered for long term used. Tunnelled lines is tunnelled under the skin with cuff that acts as anchor. The cuff will prevent the dislodgment of the catheter by forming fibrosis in the subcutaneous tunnel. The tunnelled line will enter the venous system through subclavian vein and internal jugular vein. There are two forms of tunnelled lines such as Permacath which is the tunelled version of the Vascath and Hickman line which is a tunnelled version of central venous catheter.
Tunnelled lines with implanted port system is useful for long term use. It include Portacaths. Portacaths carries the lowest rate of blood stream infection. Portacaths has no visible external part. It consists of catheter and implanted injection port under the skin which is self sealing. Huber or non coring needle is useful in assessing the Portacaths.
