Surgery Definition – What are the radiological investigations for large bowel obstruction?
The investigations require for large bowel obstruction may include plain film such as chest x ray and abdominal x ray. Chest x ray may rule out any visceral perforation while abdominal x ray may show peripheral dilation of the loops of bowel, haustrae or bands which incompletely traverse the diameter of the bowel and dilation of more than 8 cm or more than 10 cm in dilation of the cecum.
If the patient is stable and no urgent surgical intervention requires, double contrast Barium enema and double contrast CT scan of the abdomen are considered. Double contrast barium enema may indicate the level of obstruction but not the cause. Double contrast barium enema should be avoided in any cases of complete obstruction due to high risk of perforation and in this case, single contrast, of gastrograffin enema which is water soluble is considered.
