Medicine Notes - Clinical Examination - Bilateral Renal Masses
Bilateral renal masses
Bilateral renal masses are the enlargement of both kidney. The common causes of bilateral renal masses are polycystic kidney disease, tuberous sclerosis, amyloid and bilateral hydronephrosis.
Bilateral renal masses are different from hepatosplenomegaly based on the facts that renal masses are resonance to percussion. We able to get above the renal mass. There is no notch on the renal masses.
Patient with bilateral renal masses may present with dialysis fistula and high blood pressure ( mostly in polycystic kidney disease). Patient may appear pale. Patient may also present with scanty body hair and central line scars in the neck due to dialysis. Scar from the peritoneal dialysis is also inspected in the abdomen. The masses are ballotable bimanually. Blood may present on the urine which is detected by dipstick the urine ( hematuria).
