The hepatic causes of portal hypertension usually involve the parenchymal layer of the liver which include schistosomiasis, hepatic cirrhosis, primary biliary cirrhosis, polycystic disease, myeloproliferative disease, granulomatous disease such as tuberculosis or sarcoidosis, congenital hepatic fibrosis, acute hepatitis, fulminant hepatitis, veno occlusive disease and vitamin A toxicity.
