The rule of 9s involves clinical measures of the percentage of total body surface area which is affected by the burn. Both of the upper limbs counted for 9 percent each and involves the entire limb. Both of the lower limbs counted for 18 percent each and involves the entire limb. Trunk will account for 18 percent in front and 18 percent back. Head is 9 percent and involves the entire head while genitalia and perineum account for 1 percent of the total area. Any irregularities of the burn areas are measured by using the sizes of the palm. The size of the palm will account for 1 percent each of the total body surface areas.
