Surgery Definition – What is the purpose of secondary survey in ATLS?
Secondary survey is considered as a second stage which directed towards a more definitive history, thorough examination and planning the management plan. Secondary survey is also considered after having addressed the main problem and treating any life threatening injuries. Secondary survey may focus on examination from the head to toe and front and back. Tubes are considered when necessary. History of the situation and collateral history is needed as well as complete medical history. Medical history should focus on paramedic notes, patient’s history, witness history, ( AMPLE such as allergies history, medication, past medical history, last meal and events leading to situation).Proper investigation such as basic blood test and ECG is important. If patient’s condition is worsening after secondary survey return back to the basic airway, breathing and circulation assessment.
