Surgery Definition – How to investigate suspected trauma to the lower urinary tract?
The common investigation for suspected lower urinary tract trauma may include plain pelvic x ray, ascending urethrography, catheterization and cystography, intravenous urography and CT scanning.
Plain pelvic x ray is considered to look for any evidence of fractures to the pelvic with any puncture of the bladder by any bony fragments.
Ascending urethrography is considered as an initial investigation for cases of urethral injury. The dye is injected up a catheter. The catheter is inserted into the distal part of the urethra. Oblique x ray is taken. Oblique x ray will check for any extravasation of the contrast.
Catheterization and cystography are used to identify any leakage of the contrast in the peritoneum. Intravenous urography may also detect bladder displacement and perforation.
