Surgery Definition – What are indications for splenectomy?
The indications for splenectomy are primary hypersplenism ( due to abnormal elements of the blood are inappropriately removed by normal spleen in cases of hemolytic anemia), secondary hypersplenism (normal elements of the blood are removed by the abnormal spleen inappropriately such as in the case of portal hypertension), treatment of the hydatid cyst or splenic abscess, in cases of massive splenomegaly such as in myelofibrosis, due to radical surgery for gastric cancer or while staging the disease such as Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
