Surgery Definition – What are the investigations require in case of hematuria?
The investigations require for hematuria or hematuria screen may include urine dipstick for detection of nitrites or leucocytes which indicates the present of E.coli and to justify the present of microscopic hematuria. Mid stream urine is considered for microscopy, culture and sensitivity and cytology study for infection and neoplasm.
Full blood count may reveal reduction in hemoglobin level (anemia), increase in the white blood cell count due to infection mostly in the case of pyelonephritis. Blood urea nitrogen or Creatinine is considered to assess the function of the renal which may be affected in case of any disorder affecting the renal or due to urinary retention due to accumulation of the ureteric stone. Clotting screen is considered and include PT or PTT as well as liver function test. Group and cross match is indicated when transfusion is needed. Kidney ureter and bladder (KUB) imaging technique is considered to detect any renal calculi which may appear radio opaque. Intravenous urography is considered to assess the location of the calculi and degree of obstruction of the ureter and the outline of the urinary tract. Ultrasound scan able to detect stone and tumors. Flexible cystoscopy should be performed under local anesthesia.
The causes of hematuria is then treated according to the underlying causes.
