Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia
Patient with congenital diaphragmatic hernia may present with scaphoid abdomen, respiratory distress at birth and absent of breath sounds and hemithorax.
Chest x ray may reveal abdominal contents in the thoracic cavity.
Congenital diaphragmatic hernia is a form of hernia of abdominal contents which herniated through the diaphragm.
The defect may occur through the foramen of bochdalek or posterolateral defect or through the foramen of morgagni or retrosternal defect.
Treatment may include surgical repair of the newborn, intubation and ventilation,high frequency oscillatory ventilation and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. IV fluids and surgical decompression with nasogastric tube of the gastrointestinal tract for intermittent suction.
