Finasteride is a drug which is used to treat patient with early male pattern baldness and benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Finasteride is useful in inhibiting the action of 5 alpha reductase. 5 alpha reductase is a type of enzyme which is useful in conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone.
Dihydrotestosterone will binds to the receptors in the skin, seminal vesicles and prostate. Dihydrotestosterone will stimulate the growth of the prostate gland.
The common side effects associated with finasteride include erectile dysfunction and decrease in libido.
