Surgery Definition - What is an adult respiratory distress syndrome?
Adult respiratory distress syndrome is caused by aspiration, trauma, mostly chest trauma, radiation, fat embolism, air embolism and amniotic embolism, blood transfusion, burn, dialysis, drowning, disseminated intravascular coagulation, drug overdose, pneumonia, sepsis and shock.
Adult respiratory distress syndrome is a non cardiogenic pulmonary edema which is triggered by various causes which directly or indirectly injured the lung. There will be a normal pulmonary capillary wedge pressure which means that the pulmonary edema is not caused by congestive cardiac failure.
The common signs of adult respiratory distress syndrome may include, refractory hypoxemia with PaO2 / FiO2 < 200, stiff lung, diffuse patchy and infiltration on the chest x ray
The treatment of adult respiratory distress syndrome may include mechanical ventilation, PEEP, IRV and inhaled nitrous oxide which are the forms of respiratory assistance.
