Surgery Definition - What is scaphoid fracture?
Scaphoid fracture is also known as fracture of the carpal bone. The scaphoid bone divided into the distal and proximal parts which area separated by the wrist. The fracture is localized at the wrist. Scaphoid bone is predisposed to avascular necrosis due to fracture. The scaphoid bone is prone to avascular necrosis due to the present of blood supply which is an end artery that run from distal to proximal part. The proximal part is more prone to avascular necrosis due to the blood supply entering the distal pole which supplying this end later travel proximally to the proximal bone. Fracture will compromise the supply blood to the proximal pole.
