Surgery Definition – What is the pathophysiology of bowel obstruction?
Bowel is dilated proximal to the obstruction. There will be intra luminal accumulation of the fluid and gas due to third space loss or fluid sequestration which result in dehydration. Edematous wall of bowel may occur due to dilation. Edema may lead to impairment of the arterial and venous blood flow which later lead to bowel strangulation due to ischemia of the wall of the bowel. Ischemia may lead to infarction and perforation of the affected bowel. There will be spillage of the content of the bowel into the peritoneum. Systemic toxicity may occur due to continuing dehydration, electrolytes imbalance and peritonitis.
