Pharmacology definition - Sulfasalazine
Sulfasalazine
Sulfasalazine is a type of medication which is used in treating patient with juvenile arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease. Sulfasalazine should be administered with folic acid supplementation due to impaired reabsorption of folic acid.
Bacteria that present in the colon will metabolized sulfasalazine into two components such as 5 aminosalicylic acid or 5 ASA or sulfapyridine. 5 aminosalicylic or 5 ASA will acts as an anti inflammatory agent which inhibit the cyclo oxygenases ( COX) that lead to reduction in production of leukotriene and prostaglandin. 5 ASA / 5 aminosalicylic may prevent any damage to the mucosal by scavenge for oxygen radicals.
The common side effects of sulfasalazine may include suppression of the bone marrow, headache, skin rash and gastrointestinal discomfort.
