Surgery Definition – What are the causes of dysphagia?
Dysphagia is difficulty in swallowing.The causes of dysphagia can be categorized in intraluminal causes, mural causes and extraluminal causes.
The intraluminal causes may include esophageal web and foreign body. The mural or esophageal wall causes may include benign or malignant esophageal tumors, or benign strictures which are secondary to chronic reflux of the acid. The extraluminal causes may include aortic aneurysm, goiter, paraesophageal / rolling hiatus hernia, lymphadenopathy, esophageal diverticulum and pharyngeal pouch.
