Scurvy
Scurvy is caused by deficiency of vitamin C mostly due to lack of intake.
Patient with scurvy present with fatigue, anemia, swelling of the gingival and bleeding gum, impaired in the healing of the wound, purpura and petechiae, joint space bleeding and subperiosteal hemorrhage.
There will be impairment in the synthesis of collagen which later lead to decrease in the osteoid matrix formation by osteoblast. There will also be overgrowth of the cartilage with non replacement of the epiphyseal cartilage.
Scurvy is treated with supplements of vitamin C.
