Surgery Definition - What is lunate dislocation?
Lunate dislocation is caused by fall on the outstretched hand. Patient may lunate dislocation may present with swelling and ecchymosis at the wrist. There will be symptoms of median nerve palsy such as paraesthesia of radial 3 1/2 fingers and weakness of the abductor pollicis brevis muscle.
Radiological examination may reveal on lateral view that the lunate is like a cup holding the rest of the carpus within it like an apple or apple in the cup sign. However this will lost as the lunate cup has flipped in the volar direction in case of lunate dislocation.
The treatment of lunate dislocation may include attempted immediate reduction under sedation or analgesia with or without open reduction internal fixation. The area is immobilise with plaster for 6 weeks.
