The investigations may include full blood count, coagulation screen, urea and electrolytes, group and cross match and liver function test. Other examination may include digital rectal exam to rule out rectal tumors, proctoscopy to rule out any anorectal pathology such as fissures or hemorrhoids, rigid sigmoidoscopy for hemorrhoids and tumor, flexible sigmoidoscopy for colitis or diverticular disease, colonoscopy, double contrast barium enema to rule out diverticular disease or tumor and stool culture.
