Octreotide is a synthetic analog of the hormone somatostatin. Octreotide is useful in treating endocrinological disorders such as Zollinger Ellison Syndrome, acromegaly, diarrhea associated with VIP producing tumors. Octreotide may acts as a replacement of the pancreatic hormone which able to inhibit the release of gastrin and secretin.
Octreotide is also useful in treating condition due to cirrhosis leads portal hypertension. This condition is known as esophageal varices.
The common side effects of octreotide may include gastrointestinal discomfort.
