Hydatid abscess is a type of hepatic abscess. Hydatid abscess is caused by Echinococcus multilocularis and Echinococcus granulosus. Hydatid abscess is associated with zoonosis where exposure to sheep, cattle and dog may cause hydatid abscess to develop.
The symptoms and signs of hydatid abscess may include jaundice and right upper quadrant pain as well as hepatomegaly and tenderness on palpation of the right upper quadrant. The investigation such as full blood count may reveal raise in the white cell count and liver enzymes may rise in liver function test. Imaging technique may include ultrasound scan or CT scan with abdominal x ray may able to identify any calcified cyst with hydatid disease. Serological test for Echinococcus antibodies are considered and Casoni skin test. The treatment for hydatid abscess may include anti parasitic agent such as mebendazole and surgical excision of the cyst.
