The patient need to be inspected for any scar from previous hernia repair, bulging of the groin, extension of the scrotum, hernia present contralateral and changes in the skin. Palpate the hernia and feel for any tenderness, the reducibility of the hernia, cough, expansile cough impulse and control and ability to palpate the spermatid cord. Auscultation for any bowel sound. The patient can be examined both in the standing and supine position.
