Pathology definition - Meckel Diverticulum
Meckel Diverticulum
Meckel diverticulum is a blind pouch that projected on the antimesenteric border of the ileum within 2 feet of the ileocecal valve. Meckel diverticulum is a true diverticulum. Meckel diverticulum may consists of pancreatic tissue or acid secreting gastric mucosa. Meckel diverticulum consists of three layer of the wall of the bowel such as muscularis propria, submucosa and mucosa. Meckel diverticulum may appear as tubular outpouching of the small intestine. Meckel diverticulum is originating from the remnant of the vitelline duct. Meckel diverticulum is the common form of congenital abnormality of the gastrointestinal tract which affect around 2- 5 % of the population and commonly present during the first 3 years of life.
The only solution of meckel diverticulum is surgical resection.
Patient with meckel diverticulum may appear asymptomatic. However, the patient may also suffer from volvulus. Volvulus is a twisting of a portion of bowel around its own mesentery.Patient who suffer from volvulus may complain of constipation, gas, acute pain in the abdomen and distention of the sigmoid. Patient may also present with signs of bowel ischemia with the present of red currant jelly stools as a result of intussusception. Intussusception is the invagination of the segment of the bowel into a more distal segment of the bowel. Patient may also suffer from gastrointestinal bleeding as a result of peptic ulceration.
