Blood investigation may reveal anemia and liver function test and clotting studies may reveal derangement of the liver function. Chest x ray may reveal aspiration pneumonia, pleural effusion, hilar lymphadenopathy and lung metastases. Barium swallow may reveal the anatomical detail of the cancer such as as the classical features of rat tail appearance. CT scan is useful for staging the carcinoma and trans esophageal ultrasound will assess the degree of local invasion of the tumor and finally endoscopy is a gold standard where the lesion can be visualized or biopsies can be taken.
