Surgery Definition – How to treat esophageal cancer?
Patient with esophageal cancer usually presented at a late stage where it may remain inoperable. The treatment usually focuses on relieving the symptoms and palliation. Surgery is only considered in few patient where the tumor is resectable. In this case, the esophagus is rejoined or connected distally to the part of the stomach. Chemotherapy or radiotherapy is given as a neo adjuvant therapy prior to surgery. Any stricture which is caused by esophageal cancer can be dilated with endoscopic with or without placement of the stents with the aim to relieve dysphagia. Laser ablation of the tumor can also be performed. The prognosis of esophageal cancer is poor.
