Surgery Definition – What is Amebic abscess?
Amebic abscess is a type of hepatic abscess. Amebic abscess is caused by Entamoeba histolytica and the mode of spread of infection is via the fecal oral transmission. Patient with amebic abscess may present with fever, right upper quadrant pain, diarrhea, jaundice and chills. On examination, there will be hepatomegaly, jaundice and right upper quadrant tenderness. Investigation needed may include full blood count which reveal raise in the white cell count and raise in all liver enzyme as in liver function test. Imaging technique such as CT scan, ultrasound scan and abdominal x ray may reveal calcified cyst with hydatid disease. Serological test for Entamoeba antibodies is required.
The treatment of amebic abscess may include, antibiotic treatment such as metronidazole. Surgical drainage is considered if antibiotic treatment is not working.
