Medicine Notes - Clinical Examination - Mitral Regurgitation
Mitral regurgitation
Mitral regurgitation usually caused by ischemic heart disease, mitral valve prolapse, rheumatic heart disease, rupture of the papillary muscle and dilated left ventricles. In mitral valve prolapses the leaflets of the valve will prolapse and cause regurgitation.
Patient with mitral regurgitation may present with atrial fibrillation. The apex beat will be diffuse or normal in characteristic. The position of the apex beat will be displaced due to dilation of the left ventricle. Patient with mitral regurgitation may present with holosystolic /pansystolic murmur with thrill at the mitral area. The pansystolic murmur will be increased as the patient lying in the left lateral position. The pansystolic mumur of mitral regurgitation may radiate into the axilla. Younger patient who suffer from mitral regurgitation may present with signs suggestive of connective tissue disease such as Marfan syndrome which is associated with mitral valve prolapse.
The commonest complication of mitral regurgitation is cardiac failure.
