STREPTOCOCCAL PHARYNGITIS
1. Throat culture and sensitivity or rapid strep test before beginning
treatment.
2. If not allergic to penicillin, prescribe penicillin VK (Pen-Vee K) 250–500 mg qid..
3. For patients who cannot take oral medication, administer benzathine penicillin (Bicillin LA) 1.2 million units IM in buttocks.
4. For patients who are allergic to penicillin, prescribe clarithromycin 250 mg bid or cefaclor (Ceclor) 250–500 mg tid (if penicillin allergy was not associated with anaphylactic shock).
