Surgery Definition – What is reperfusion injury?
Reperfusion injury is one of the dangerous situation which occur as a result of successful treatment of acute ischemia. There will be an accumulation of toxins such as myoglobin, lactate and potassium in ischemic period. Reperfusion of the limb due to successful treatment of acute limb ischemia may lead to circulation of the toxins. The circulation of the toxins may lead to renal failure, adult respiratory distress syndrome and arrhythmias.
