Surgery Definition – What is perforation of inflamed diverticulae?
Perforation of the inflamed diverticulae may lead to the release of the feculent matter into the peritoneum and peritonitis may develop. Patient may present with nausea, vomiting, malaise, fever, peritonitic abdomen such as generalized rebound tenderness and guarding, rigidity, absent of bowel sound and board like rigidity. Chest x ray may reveal the present of free air under the diaphragm while CT scan may identify the location of perforation. The treatment of perforation as a result of inflamed diverticulae may include antibiotic and laparotomy with resection of the affected segment of colon and formation of the stoma ( Hartmann’s procedure) re joining is considered at a later date.
