Surgery Definition – What is Compartment Syndrome?
Compartment syndrome may occur due to raise in pressure of the fascial compartment of the limb due to edema. This may lead to reduction in venous flow and further may raise the pressure in the intra compartmental pressure. As a result of arterial inflow will be compromised and lead to necrosis and muscle ischemia.
Compartment syndrome is caused by reperfusion injury, tight plaster of Paris, open fractures, closed fractures and crush injury.
Compartment syndrome may present with out of proportion pain on passive stretching of the muscle that is affected. Pain is manifest by palpating the affected muscle group. Patient with Compartment syndrome may also present with paraesthesia, pulselessness, pallor and perishingly cold.
Compartment Syndrome is treated with fasciotomy or surgically cutting open the fascia of the compartment that is affected.
