Medicine Notes - Clinical Examination - Sixth Nerve Palsy

Sixth nerve palsy
The causes of sixth nerve palsy are multiple sclerosis ( pale optic disc), vascular lesions in the brainstem, cavernous sinus, raised intracranial pressure ( due to the long course of the sixth cranial nerve) and lesion of the superior orbital fissure. Papilloedema is associated with raised intracranial pressure.
Sixth nerve palsy may lead to adduction of the affected eye with inward pointing of the eye. The abduction of the eye is minimal or limited in nature. Patient may complain of double vision mostly while trying to abduct the eye.
